Gilgit-Kashgar Bus Service Resumes After 14 years
Gilgit: According to reports on October 7, the Northern Areas Transport Corporation (NATCO) has granted authority from the Ministry of Communications to resume its Gilgit-Kashgar bus service after a 14-year hiatus.
According to details, operations were suspended after landslides in 2010 caused flooding of Attabad Lake and key sections of the Karakoram Highway (KKH). The cross-border route is operated by NATCO in partnership with Xinjiang Kashgar Xinlu Transport Co., Ltd. of China. It aims to strengthen trade and tourism ties between Pakistan and China. The resumption of bus services is part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) initiative to strengthen bilateral relations.
The Ministry of Transport issued a No Objection Certificate (NOC) on September 30, 2024, authorizing NATCO to formally sign the agreement with its Chinese counterparts. NATCO spokesperson Ehsan Shah confirmed that the bus services are expected to resume soon. Final adjustments to the 2006 agreement are underway and a formal signing ceremony is planned.
The reinstatement of the Gilgit-Kashgar bus service is intended to enhance tourism and trade between Pakistan and China, further improving links between the two adjacent nations under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
This reactivation would link the picturesque Gilgit-Baltistan area to Kashgar, a major trading hub, improving regional connectivity and economic possibilities.
Once restored, the service would connect the gorgeous area of Gilgit-Baltistan with Kashgar, a major trade hub in Xinjiang, China, making travel easier for both locals and visitors.
