PM Imran Khan will open Islamabad’s first security dialogue on Wednesday, March 17, 2021, aimed at revealing Pakistan’s new strategic direction.
The two-day conference is organized by the Division of Homeland Security in partnership with its Advisory Board, which includes five of the country’s leading think tanks.
Prime Minister Imran Khan said that food security and climate change are new national security challenges.
“People think that if we only strengthened the military and security forces, it would be enough for national security,” the prime minister said, addressing the ceremony. “I pay tribute to the military and secret intelligence agencies who sacrificed their lives to save ours, but there are other challenges as well.”
“National security today includes many aspects that have been ignored in previous decades, including climate security, food security and economic prosperity,” he added.

Prime Minister Imran said no one in the past has talked about climate change and its [long-term] effects. He added that the government’s 10 million tree planting campaign was an effort to combat climate change that could have disastrous consequences for our future generations if not addressed.
Developing further, he claimed that food security is also part of a country’s national security paradigm, as Pakistan’s population was increasing at a rapid pace.
“We had to import four million tons of wheat just to meet the need,” he said, adding that the government had misjudged providing food security to the masses.
Prime Minister Imran said the economy is also part of national security, as a stronger economy means a stronger country.
The new strategic direction revealed at the conference will be based on a global security framework in line with Prime Minister Imran Khan’s vision of peace, regional connectivity and development partnerships with the world.

At the event, the Prime Minister will also launch the Division’s first-of-its-kind advisory portal.
The advisory portal will be a dedicated and integrated platform through which leading think tanks and universities working on national security will be able to share policy recommendations directly with national leadership.
The Army Chief, General Qamar Javed Bajwa, will be the guest of honor on the second day of the conference.
