Punjab Approves Land Allotments, E-bus Initiative & More Projects

Lahore: The Punjab Cabinet has authorised the allocation of 100,000 acres of land to landless farmers, as well as other initiatives such as an e-bus service and a historic community wedding programme. As stated on October 9, this area would be leased for temporary agriculture for three to five years.

According to the details shared, the cabinet also approved a historic mass marriage scheme to benefit 3,000 girls from low-income families. Under this initiative, each bride will receive a dowry of PKR 100,000 through a bank card along with 13 essential items, including furniture and cutlery. The prime minister ordered to expand the scope of the mass wedding scheme.

In addition, the cabinet also approved an electric bus service scheme, with 27 buses to be deployed in the first phase. To ensure efficiency, the electric bus parking lot will be equipped with 1.2 MW solar panels for charging. A total of 680 electric buses are expected to be operational in Punjab by the end of this year.

Prime Minister Sharif also ordered the formulation of an “Electric Taxi Service Scheme” in Lahore and stressed the need to strictly monitor the prices of flour and chicken across the province.

Approximately 1.1 million applications were made for Kisan cards, of which 170,000 farmers in Punjab have gotten them, according to information presented during the conference. Approximately 1.2 million applications were submitted to the Green Tractor Scheme, and 700,000 of those have been processed.

The transfer of funding to the Housing Department for the building of 839 dwellings in Raiwind, Chiniot, and Sargodha under the New Pakistan Housing Scheme was approved by the cabinet. Additionally, permission was granted for the yearly maintenance of the Punjab government’s helicopter and for Pakistan State Oil to get land in Sheikhupura for the purpose of retaining oil.

The nomination of the Minister of Agriculture to the Federal Seed Board, the reappointment of the Board of Directors for the Punjab Health Initiatives Management Company, and an agreement between the Board of Revenue (BoR) and the Bank of Punjab (BoP) for tax collection on property transfers through an e-stamping system were among the other decisions made

The cabinet also authorised a PKR 1.7 billion budget for acquiring equipment and furnishings to upgrade tertiary care institutions. The Annual Development Programme (ADP) featured development initiatives at five main hospitals.

In addition, the cabinet approved the reconstitution of the Healthcare Commission’s Board of Commissioners, the transfer of shares from the Irrigation Department to the Punjab Power Development Company Limited, and the Draft Legal Framework of the Waqf Administration, Trust, and Cooperative Societies Act 2023.

Finally, the Punjab Forensic Act of 2007 was abolished and replaced with the Punjab Forensic Science Act 2024. The cabinet authorised extending the personnel contract for the Home Department’s Management Information System, nominating a presiding officer for the Child Protection Court in Lahore, and implementing a sale deed for A-category property purchasers.

The Punjab Local Government Rules 2024 were also adopted, including the decision to form a Joint Local Government Authority in each district. A high-level Ministerial Committee will be established to revise the Prevention of Child Marriage Act of 1929.
