Current Situation in Northern Areas

Kaghan Valley and Mahandri

A flood in the Munawar Nullah on August 2nd destroyed the main Mahandri Bridge, thereby isolating the Kaghan Valley from Balakot. As authorities seek to restore the region’s links with neighbouring locations, construction is underway on the Mahandri Bridge on the Kaghan Highway.

Gilgit-Baltistan & Chitral

Prior to the commencement of the monsoon, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF)/flash floods notice for Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan, citing high rains in the region. In the second week of July, flash floods erupted in the lower Chitral valley, destroying roads and private property.

The only other way out of the region for tourists stuck in the Naran and Kaghan areas is to travel down the Chilas road, which passes through Babusar, Chilas, and Besham. The high risk of landslides in the area should cause anyone considering a visit to reevaluate their travel schedule.

Recommendations for Tourists

Tourists in the impacted areas are advised to:

● Stay informed about the latest travel updates and advisories.

● Follow instructions from local authorities and disaster management teams.

● Consider postponing trips to high-risk areas until conditions improve.

● Use alternate routes as recommended and be prepared for potential delays.

As heavy flooding and persistent rain impact northern regions this August, it’s crucial to stay informed and plan your travel carefully. Stay safe, monitor weather and road updates regularly, and adjust your travel plans as needed to navigate the challenging conditions effectively.
