PARKS TO BE INAUGURATED IN GILGIT BALTISTANÂ
Prime Minister Imran Khan will inaugurate the two highest national parks in Gilgit-Baltistan during his visit today; 2.12.2020 (Wednesday).Â
According to local media, PM will inaugurate the Nangan Parbat National Park and Himalayan National Parks.
PROTECTED AREAS INITIATIVE
These national parks are being inaugurated under the project, PROTECTED AREAS INITIATIVE. The “Protected Areas Initiative” launched by Prime Minister Imran Khan, an avid environmentalist, responds to environmental challenges and climate changes. This initiative is being kick-started with the announcement of 15 national parks, covering a land area of over 7,300 square kilometers. Nine are new and recently declared national parks, while six others were notified earlier but never protected.Â
According to Adviser to the Prime Minister on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam.
“It is for the first time in a while that Pakistan has prepared national parks spread over vast acres of land.” He further added that the campaign also includes renovation of parks in Balochistan and parts of Sindh.
Aslam added that endangered animals in the country such as snow leopards and ibex should be protected with the support of residents.
He pointed out that the Government had indulged in the debt for not investing in nature. “Through this, a country can reduce its debts by committing to protect nature and enhance biodiversity.”
These parks will be monitored by the World Wildlife Fund for Nature and the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
During the visit, Imran Khan will attend the oath-taking ceremony of Gilgit-Baltistan’s new cabinet.
The Gilgit-Baltistan cabinet includes Raja Muhammad Zakaria, Haji Shah Baig, Javed Manawa, Wazir Kaleem, Raja Azam, Fatehullah, Raja Nasir Abbas, Sohail Abbas, and Shams Lone.
The PM will also hold meetings with the Chief Minister and Cabinet members, where important matters and future action courses would be discussed.
