RAWALPINDI: The Punjab government has started a new alignment of the much needed Rawalpindi Ring Road project.
The decision was made after Prime Minister Imran Khan became aware of the alleged changes to the alignment of the much-needed Rawalpindi Ring Road project, which not only increased the cost of the project by Rs 25 billion, but also allegedly benefited some private real estate companies.
As the controversy over the Rawalpindi ring road project deepens, Special Assistant to Prime Minister Zulfiqar Abbas Bukhari (Zulfi Bukhari) resigned on Monday as Prime Minister’s Special Assistant for Pakistanis overseas and Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar said if the corruption allegations against him proved he would quit politics

According to a senior Punjab government official, the RRR case was referred to the National Accountability Office (NAB) and the Punjab Anti-Corruption Department (ACD) for thorough investigation into Prime Minister Imran Khan’s directive after two separate incidents. The search reports, one from Commissioner Rawalpindi and the other from the Deputy Commissioner and the Additional Commissioner, were received in his office.
On the other hand, the provincial government has started work on a new route for the road.
Reporting to the chief secretary of Punjab, Commissioner Rawalpindi Syed Gulzar Hussain Shah said that the works for the alignment of the Rawalpindi ring road were started on the instructions of the Prime Minister of Punjab.
He said he made sure the new formation is free from corruption.
The chief secretary ordered that alternative proposals along with cost estimates be presented to him as soon as possible so that the project could be completed on the same budget.
He dismissed all rumors about the closure of the RRR project.
Furthermore, he said that the importance of this project is clear to the inhabitants of Rawalpindi, so there is no point in stopping it.
He has ordered to send the PC-1 as soon as possible.
He expressed these views while briefing the Punjab chief secretary about the Rawalpindi Ring Road via video link.
Development Director Nazia Sadhan, Deputy Assistant Commissioner (Revenue), Captain (retired) Qasim Ijaz, Deputy Director of RDA Azizullah, and other interested government officials were present at the meeting.
