Pakistan To Host World Environment Day Today
ISLAMABAD: In partnership with the United Nations Environment Program, Pakistan will host World Environment Day on Saturday June 5,2021 (today).
The day will be celebrated around the world through various events and activities, in line with the latest corona virus regulations. This year’s theme is “ecosystem restoration” and aims to re-establish our relationship with nature.
Pakistan, in recognition of its leading role in implementing promising “Ecosystem Restoration Initiatives”, hosted World Environment Day, where it will present its success stories for nature conservation.
The main event in Pakistan will be held on June 5 at the Jinnah Convention Center in Islamabad, where official activities will be opened by Prime Minister Imran Khan and broadcast live around the world through official and social portals.
The Prime Minister will formally announce the results of the first billion trees planted under the flagship 10 billion Trees Tsunami Project (TBTTP), Clean Green Pakistan, and the Electric Vehicle Policy, National Parks, and Green jobs.
Pakistan’s contribution to carbon emissions is minimal but it is one of the countries most affected by climate change.

Summit the recent Bonn Challenge pledge, the successful restoration of 0.3 million hectares of forest cover in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province under the first commitment of the Bonn Challenge,
15 national parks together with the marine protected area established under the initiative for protected areas and finally the Green Finance initiative presented by Pakistan in the global forums for the Ecosystem Restoration Fund, said Amin Aslam, SAPM on climate change at a press conference.

The day will also mark the formal launch of the United Nations Decade for Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030.
The United Nations Decade aims to massively expand the restoration of degraded and destroyed ecosystems to combat the climate crisis, prevent the loss of one million species and improve food security, water supply and livelihoods.
Large corporations, non-governmental organizations, communities, governments and celebrities from around the world embrace World Environment Day to support environmental causes.
Held annually since 1974, the event has also become a vital platform for promoting progress on the environmental dimensions of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Objective of the Program
In a statement for the occasion, the prime minister said that the goal of this program was to increase tree cover, protect wildlife, and decrease due to lack of habitat, increase mangroves.
He said the government was also working on restoring wetlands through the use of floodwaters and replenishing the water table.
The prime minister said that because the whole process also helped in creating green jobs, the government created 80,000 jobs for women and young people during the COVID-19 pandemic.
At a time when people were left unemployed as a result of the lock down during the COVID-19 pandemic, the government allowed women and young people in remote areas in particular to generate income from growing nurseries, he added
